“WHAT TO FORGET”

Rev. Mrs. Sherry Whitaker is to be commended for her straight forward and uplifting Sunday School lessons in the present quarterly.  Today’s lesson (July 27), “Getting to Know a Person” sure did bring on lots of discussion in the class, and it gave all of us seed thoughts for the future.  Thanks Sherry for the lessons.

As I gave thought to the lesson, and the writing of this “Comfort Zone,” many thoughts came to me about things of the past I need to forget; and what to look forward for.  I hope these thoughts will help you.

My mind let go a thousand things, like dates of wars and deaths of fellow soldiers and fellow ministers. For sure, it is better to forget the things that hurt us, And to live each day and take whatever come, with the hope that tomorrow; I will “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord”(James 5: 7). O my, let us forget the slander we have heard;  the unkind words;  the storms of yesterday.  Let me forget the gray in my hair;  the gas bills;  the sour face at Burger King.

Lord, help us “THINK ON THESE THINGS;”  therefore, says St. Paul, “..if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.   Remember the good. Like, what I heard said of the Rev. Johnny  Phelps; “He had a gold voice” - beautiful, and he will be remember for his ministry in the Lord’s service. It seems to me that the good things, the heavenly guidance,  the help that other men have given us to keep the right path, are the things to remember.  The mistakes, the false leads, the devilish influences, are the things to forget.  Man is like a bird in a cage until he lives for eternity.  He is like a prisoner in  a cell until he gives the eternal within him expression.

I remember a story of a lady who went to a local pet shop. She browsed around for a while and saw a beautiful parrot. She told the owner of the store that she just had to have the parrot. The owner said, "Oh, I can't let you have that parrot." The lady insisted. The owner said, "I'm sorry I can't let you have that parrot. It lets out the worst profanity you could ever image." The lady said, "That's OK. I will train it." The owner finally gave in and sold the parrot.

The lady, with great excitement, takes her new parrot home. She gets the parrot's cage all set up and puts the parrot in the cage. After the parrot checks out its new home, it lets out the worst profanity that you could ever imagine. The lady says, "I'm going to teach you an important lesson." She then takes the parrot out of the cage and puts it into the freezer for a few minutes.

After she takes the parrot out of the freezer, the parrot rubbing its wings says, "I have just one question for you. What did the turkey in there say?"

The turkey in the freezer was no doubt frozen, but we don't have to be frozen in the past.

It does not matter what we have done in the past or what mistakes we have made. With Jesus Christ as the king of our lives, we are forgiven and brought into the loving presence of God. That is the best image we can have of Jesus Christ. Now, let's share that image of Christ with others. Like others have done for us.
