None of us will ever forget the images of what happened that awful day in April 1995, the day that Federal office building in Oklahoma City was destroyed by a mad man's bomb. The images of that devastated building, of the frantic rescue efforts, of a baby in a fireman's arms; it was a day of heart-wrenching tragedy and a day of incredible heroism. Literally, an entire city dropped everything to respond in whatever way they could to this life-or-death situation. The job was clear, rescue the dying, whatever it takes.
Fanny Crosby's song, "Rescue
the Perishing" challenges
us to (V.4): "Rescue the perishing - Duty demands it! Strength for thy labor
the Lord will provide; Back to the narrow way, Patiently win them, Tell the poor
wanderer a Savior has died."
Jesus says to us in
John 20:21, "As the Father
has sent Me, I am sending you."
Our job is clear; to rescue
the dying people around us, whatever it takes. The love chapter, 1st
Corinthians 13, tells me that.....
"LOVE IS DOING"
Love is an action word -
Jesus loved/loves us, and He didn't just say so - He did something about it, and
it wasn't easy. He took our sins upon Himself and paid our penalty in death -
then He arose, and He comes to us with forgiveness. Ministry without love
cheapens those that are touched by it; but ministry with love enriches the whole
church. Yes, there is a whole lot of
hard doing
for us to love that someone
that does us some dirt. God the Father taught us love by sending His Son
(1Jn.4:19), and God the Son taught us love by giving His life and by commanding
us to love each other (Jn.13:34, 35). The most important lesson in the school
of faith is to love one another. Love enriches all that it touches.
D.L. Moody had shown great
kindness to a friend. In thanking him, the friend said:
"I hope to repay you someday for your kindness."
Moody answered:
"Don't wait for me! Do it to the first person that comes along."
That's why we are where we are - in school - the workplace - some organization.
Jesus has a reason for you being there - it's a divine assignment.
How are you doing?
He put us here not only to say, but to
"show and tell"
them about Jesus.
You
never know how much time you may have to say that kind word, act with
gentleness, put your arm around a loved one, or help someone God has placed on
your heart. But do reach out before long with an email or perhaps a phone call
- even better, a visit. God has called us to love, and it is our most
important need in life, not only for you and me, but also for those who have
been or will be carefully placed into your life by a loving God. Touch them
with His love - soon!
