“ARE YOU READY?”
Genesis 13: 14-18
A city dweller moved to a farm and bought a cow. Shortly after he bought the cow, she went dry. When he told a neighbor farmer, the farmer expressed surprise. The city man said, “I can’t understand it. If a person was ever considerate of an animal, I was of that cow. If I don’t need any milk, I didn’t milk her. If I only needed a quart, I only took a quart. The farmer explained to the city man; “The only way to keep a cow flowing is take as much as possible from the cow.” Is that not also true of the Christian life? Those who only turn to God in need miss the real joy that is the rightful heritage of the Christian. A state of readiness is a theme that echoes throughout the scriptures.
The Lord Jesus Christ, said to his disciples,
"Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning; and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through. Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh" (Luke 12:35-40).
The
attack of 9/11, brought this bold black headline on the front page
of many newspapers “Bush: ‘Get Ready.’” It was referring, of
course, to President Bush’s call for Americans to be ready for whatever happens
in the near future as the nation strikes out against the terrorists who
committed the most heinous series of coordinated acts of terrorism in
American history. But I am here to tell you that there is a much more
urgent meaning here to the phrase, “Get ready!”
First, let me say that I am constantly amazed at
how God can take such unspeakable evils and use them to bring glory to Himself.
Some asked; “Does death allow a second
chance at salvation? Death allows no
“second chance” at salvation. And no one knows when death will strike. Jesus
told the parable of the rich man who was doing so well he wanted to build
bigger barns to hold his wealth. There’s no indication he was sick.
There’s no indication he was attacked by vandals. But he died. The Bible
says God told him, “Thou fool, this night thy
soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which
thou hast provided?” (Luke 12:20.) Do you
know someone – a friend or perhaps a relative – who died totally
unexpectedly? Chances are you do. It’s not uncommon. Death doesn’t always
announce itself in advance.
Today is the day of salvation. Today is the day to ask God for forgiveness of sin in your life, and by faith trust Him for salvation.
