"OUR LEGACY OF LIBERTY"
Psalm 33: 12
"Our Legacy of Liberty" did not come cheap. This nation was forged out by men and women who recognized their dependence upon almighty God. A people who loved God and gave, and still are, their lives in the struggle for Liberty. Men and women who stood for (even today) what they believed - men and women of commitment. They were (are) committed to God.
A former President of Argentine was asked: "Why is it that South America, with all of it's natural advantages - iron - coal - copper - silver - gold, great rivers, and settled before North America; why is it so far behind North America?" After a few moments of thought, he replied: " I have come to the conclusion, our country was settled by the Spanish who came in search of Gold, your country was settled by Pilgrim Fathers in search of God." {Info: America, 1975}
I am a husband by choice, a father by desire, a preacher by calling, but an American by birth. Like millions of others I served my country during world war two; but I did nothing to deserve the freedom I (you) enjoy today; I was born an American. America became great because God made her great. The Bible tells us (Prov. 14:34) that ".. righteousness exalted a nation;" then (11:11), "By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted.." - but this is not all V. 11 said: "...but it is over thrown by the mouth of the wicked."
An elderly Scottish woman was making her way through the countryside. Each time she came to a crossroads she would toss a stick into the air. Whichever way the stick came down was the direction she went. At one intersection, however, an old man saw her toss her stick into the air not once, not twice, but three times before resuming her journey. The old man was curious. "Why are you throwing your stick like that?" he asked. She squinted and replied, "I'm letting God direct my journey by using this stick." "Then why did you throw it three times?" asked the curious old man. "Because," she said, "the first two times He was pointing me in the wrong direction." {Unknown source}
A Nation becomes great when she has the right kind of citizens. Citizens who honor the direction the Lord points, the first time. Forty seven of the fifty six who signed the declaration of Independence, declaring the thirteen American Colonies free and independent of Great Britain received their education in Christian schools. We often forget that, in declaring our independence from an earthly power, our forefathers made a forthright declaration of dependence upon almighty God.
The first President of these United States, George Washington said in his first inaugural address: "The gracious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a Nation that has disregarded the ETERNAL RULES of order and right with which Heaven itself has ordered."
And remember what Jacob said when he woke up from his dream. He said, "Surely, the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it! . . .This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Every moment can be like that. Do we remember, or do we forget? Do we realize God's presence, or are we oblivious, or unconscious?
