We hear in the gospel story {Matthew
14:22-33} that the disciples had been commanded by Jesus to take a
boat and go before him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee while Jesus
stayed behind to dismiss the crowds that had gathered to listen to Him, and
be fed. By evening Jesus was alone - praying - and the disciples were now
far out from the shore, being battered by wind and waves.
"During the fourth watch of the night
Jesus went to them, walking on the water," and when
the disciples saw someone walking across the water towards them, they are
terrified and, they cry out in fear, not knowing it was Jesus. Jesus
responded to their fear: "Take courage! It is
I. Don't be afraid." Peter cried out,
"Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the
water." And Jesus answered,
"Come." And what does
Peter do, he climbs out of the boat, and begins to walk on the water towards
Jesus.
Yes, I know that many people dismiss this as simply a
tale that is told. Stories like this; of healing and resurrection are but
symbols for other things. I don't agree with these people at all. I choose
to believe when we take Jesus at His Word, His power lifts us up and allows
us to weather the storms of life.
Peter's experience gives us concern. Peter could walk on
the water because he had faith in Christ Word {VS..28}.
Paul said; "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the
word of God" {Rom.10:17}.
When we forget the Word, and stop looking unto Jesus, like Peter, we are in
trouble.
Beloved, keep in mind the disciples were not in the storm
because they disobeyed Christ, as Jonah did, but because they obeyed Him.
If we obey the word of God, there will be stormy Jordan's to cross, but
praise the Lord we will not have to cross Jordan alone. Jesus is there.
When we like Peter can say, "Lord save me"
{VS..30}. Here is real courage. Peter was
wise in crying out for help so soon - many wait until they are up to their
necks.
I read some time back that when the piercing eye of the
rattlesnake is fixed upon birds, or squirrels they are rendered incapable of
escaping. Only God know how many persons fall helpless into the destructive
jaws of sin, because they keep looking at it until its fascinating eye
overcome them.
Let go of the world, keep focused on Jesus, here is
where the real help come from. Step out by faith - leave you "Comfort Zone"
- respond to the Lord who bids us come to him.
When we do power flows, marvelous things happen, and we
discover new things about ourselves. Blessed be God - day by day.
"Most loving and gracious God - We ask that your Spirit
would fill us and make this time a holy time that is pleasing to you. We
ask that you would help us to do that which you call us to do - and to
make us a people whose praise and devotion bring unto you the
everlasting glory that is due to your
most wonderful name. Breath into us this day that we may bring
your life and your light to all whom we meet." Amen."
