"THANK GOD FOR AMERICA"
2nd Chronicles 7: 12, 19-22 [Part one]
When you hear December 7, 1941 mentioned, what comes to mind? - - Pearl Harbor. What stands out in you mind when you hear September 11, 2001 mentioned?- - Terrorists attack in New York City. What about June 6, 1944 - D-day invasion of Normandy. And one more date: Beginning in 1954, the United States designated November 11 as Veterans Day. Did you/will you pause to think about what that day signifies, the men and women who offered themselves in service to their country. Often when I think of Veteran’s day, I remember funerals with flag-draped coffins and armed soldiers who give seven gun salutes, and tightly folded flags being presented to grieving widows or mothers.
We observe many days during the year that remind us of generations that have preceded us, and the price they paid for our freedom and our heritage. I love the song: “God bless America, land that I love...” And I am convinced that God has blessed America. I am also convinced that the Bible teaches that to whom much is given, much is expected. Then God must expect a lot from America. Think with me a moment about America’s past?
History tells us that in 1620 a group of Christians made their way from England across the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of this land. Eventually, they came ashore at a place we know as "Plymouth Rock." But before they did, they wrote what we know today as "The Mayflower Compact." It begin with these words: "In the name of God,... we whose names are underwritten ... Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith ... in the presence of God and one another, covenant, and combine ourselves together..."
When you first read the "Mayflower Compact," did you really hear what they were saying? "We have come here in the name of God - we have come here to glorify God - we have come here to advance the Christian faith." I choose to believe they were saying: "We searched for a place where we can worship God the way we believe the Bible teaches us to worship Him."
Someone has said, "The difference between the North and South America is that the Spaniards went to South America in search of Gold, but the Pilgrims and Puritans came to North America in search of God." There is a lots of truth in that statement. The earliest foundations of this new land were spiritual foundations. We are a nation built upon faith in, and commitment to, God.
Think about America present. Are you proud to be an American? I am, and I get chills when I sing the “Star Spangled Banner.” Tears come to my eyes when I say the Pledge of Allegiance. There are so many things you can do in this land you can’t do anywhere else in the world. Remember this; and stand tall before God, and stop, look up at the flag - the American flag November 11, and “Thank God For America.”
