THE GUIDEPOSTS OF LIFE"
My wife Kitty and I were invited to the Glencoe Cumberland Presbyterian Church 150 Birthday celebration - a two day celebration - celebrating 150 years of ministry in the area know as Glencoe, Alabama.  What a blessed two days this was.  And as we returned to our place of abode,  tired, but excited - excited for the people of God known as Cumberland Presbyterians in Glencoe, Alabama.  These two days reminded me that this celebration would never happened if Bro. Robert Tant, the pastor - the session - the planning committee - the church as a whole had remained in the "Their Comfort Zone."  Thank the Lord for "A People Called Cumberland Presbyterian" in Glencoe, Alabama.

This celebration of ministry led me to the second part of "The Guideposts of Life;" "Be Guided By A Person."  And that person is the Lord Jesus. People change - pastors change pastorates - sessions change - buildings change, but Christ is ever the same.  We must let Christ guide our thoughts - we must meditate upon Him.  The Psalmist said (19:14):  "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, my redeemer."

Another Guidepost is:  "Be Guided By A task."   We are commanded to follow our Saviour.  Jesus once said (Luke 9:62):  "No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."  This Guidepost  reminded me of a window I used in a sermon years past; about "This Large Rock." A man was sleeping one night - Saviour appeared - told man He had work for him to do.  The man was reminded of this large rock out front:  "I want you to push against that rock with all your might." This, the man did, day after day - for years.

He set his shoulder squarely against the cold, massive surface of the rock, pushing with all his might.  Each night the man went to his cabin, sore and worn out. After years of toiling, pushing against that rock,  the man became discourgaed and disheartened.  "Why kill myself over this" he thought.  I am never going to move that rock.  The man decided to make this a matter of prayer.

"Lord, I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked.  Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock - what is wrong? - why am I failing?"

The Lord responded: "My friend, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done.  Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it.  Your task was to push.  And now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed.  But, is that really so?"

"Look at yourself.  Your arms are strong and muscled,  your back is brown,  your hands are callused from constant pressure,  your legs have become massive and hard.  Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have.  Yet you haven't moved the rock.  But your calling was to to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom.  This you have done.  I, my friend,  will move the rock."  {Source not known)

At times  when we hear a word from God,  we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God's wants is just simple obedience and faith in Him.

These three Guideposts are very important for we Christians:  "Be Guided by the Book (Bible) -  Be Guided by A Person (The Lord Jesus)  and, Be Guided by A Task,"  what ever it may be.

God bless - love you in "HIS" service,
     Roy
