“WONDERFUL PEACE”                                                                                                   Philippians 4:7

I read Ron Newhouse devotion about a little girl in Sunday School who was asked what she had learned from the story of Jesus changing water into wine at the wedding celebration at Cana. She answered: "It is always a good idea to have Jesus around." Children can give us some great wisdom in understanding life.

The reason we often track mud into our lives, and lean on crutches, and admire ourselves in mirrors, is that we won't allow the presence of God in Christ to be reflective in our everyday existence. Christmas is a celebration and a way of life-not a one day festival of getting what we want.

Every time you sing that Christmas carol, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," you sing those words, "Peace on earth and mercy mild." But if you ever watch the news or read a newspaper, you may well be asking, "Whatever happened to peace on earth?" Good question. The head of the CIA recently said that the terrorism danger for Americans is as high as it was the summer before September 11, 2001. One national correspondent recently expressed on television what a whole lot of people are feeling - he said, "I have never in my lifetime seen such a high degree of threat to our personal security." Throw in dangers that you may be facing personally, medical or financial or just in your personal life - well, where's that peace that Christmas is supposed to be about?

The peace we need most is peace with the God who made us, Who we'll meet when we die. And Romans 5:1 says, "We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." When Jesus enters your life, the wall between you and God comes down forever and the war in your soul is over. And there's peace. Peace that is recession-proof, divorce-proof, terror-proof, death-proof. But first comes your surrender of you running your own life. When you grab Jesus in total trust as your personal Rescuer from the guilt and penalty of your sin, the storm inside is replaced with His incredible peace. And you know you're ready for eternity, whenever and however it comes.

“Peace! Peace! Wonderful peace, Coming down from the Father above, sweep over my spirit forever I pray, in fathomless billows of love.” (W.G. Cooper, hymn, “Wonderful Peace“)

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Luke 2: 10-14
